 'Memory Lines'
by Carol Divall
An exhibition from April 2021

"For 35 years my art practice has explored themes related to domesticity.

Blankets and the media of felt are used as symbols of home and comfort, of protection and familial warmth. Felt is the oldest form of textile; it has been with humans for thousands of years and perhaps has an unspoked link to the human psyche. Stitching implies repairing, preserving and reviving; making do with what is to hand – ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ was pertinent at a time not so distant from the present, throw-away approach to possessions.

I trace my memories through lines of stitching; journeys of thread thought through thoughts and recollections. Although this art-making process may be meditative, it is – as much as any art process can be – intentional.

These works reflect ways in which we respond to, and deal with states of the human condition."
